Alannah Smith, Marketing Communications Strategist at Craig Hospital

MEET THE PREZ

President, IABC Colorado, Marketing Communications Strategist, Craig Hospital May 2018-June 2019 President

TAP| What goals or projects are you most excited or passionate about?

AS| This year, we’re focusing on a number of goals and projects, one being creating a student group within our chapter. This is something I’m very excited about as I started as a student member of IABC in Toronto and it really helped me make connections in the industry and learn from professionals at all levels and sectors. I think it’s so important for students to have the opportunity to connect and learn from professionals working in their field of study and to be exposed to mentorship opportunities. I was fortunate to have some amazing mentors early on in my career and I am passionate about being able to foster mentorship connections for others.

TAP| How has volunteering in this big of a way been rewarding for your business and/or you personally?

AS| Being President of IABC Colorado has been rewarding in so many ways – both personally and professionally. IABC helped shape my career early on has helped me stay passionate about continuing education throughout my career. Now, as president of the Colorado chapter, I am honored to give back to the organization that has helped shape the professional I am today. It’s exciting and rewarding for me to provide communications professionals at all stages in their careers with great content to keep them in tune with trends in our industry and help them create lasting connections with their peers.

TAP| Why should people support IABC?

AS| The Colorado chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC Colorado) is the Rocky Mountain region’s leading organization dedicated to helping advance the careers of communication professionals. Our members work in diverse roles, including employee communications, public relations, marketing communications, media relations, community relations and many other disciplines.

IABC Colorado hosts events designed to help members and not-yet-members engage, explore and excel. This includes monthly Lunch & Learn seminars on the third Tuesday of the month (except July and December). The seminars are held in conjunction with our chapter sponsor, The University of Denver’s University College. Speakers discuss topics aimed to enhance our strategic, tactical and personal communications skills. We also host four free networking events throughout the year, including an evening event in July, two breakfast events and our annual Holiday Happy Hour in December.

IABC membership has many advantages to help you grow in your networks and career with professional opportunities around the world.

TAP| How can we support the IABC?

AS| As the only global communication association, we strive to advocate for the profession, represent best practices, define the global standard and live by a code of ethics. Our goal is to engage our members and not-yet-members with timely, relevant education provided by experts and peers in the industry.
